Chinese danmei (Boys’ Love) novels have given us some of the most compelling stories in modern web literature — rich world-building, complex characters, emotional depth, and relationships that linger long after the final chapter. While a handful of titles like Mo Dao Zu Shi, Heaven Official’s Blessing, and The Scum Villain’s Self-Saving System have received animated adaptations, many excellent novels remain without a proper donghua.
Due to content regulations in China, full danmei adaptations are rare and often toned down. Still, the demand for high-quality animated versions of these stories continues to grow among international fans. Below is a curated list of novels that, in my opinion, particularly deserve the animation treatment — whether for their visual potential, emotional intensity, or unique settings.
The Husky and His White Cat Shizun (Erha)
Author: Rou Bao Bu Chi Rou (Meatbun)
An epic xianxia filled with heavy angst, redemption, and one of the most intense master-disciple dynamics in the genre. The scale of the cultivation world, the tragic backstory, and the emotional rollercoaster would translate beautifully into animation.
Qiang Jin Jiu (Ballad of Sword and Wine)
Author: Tang Jiuqing
A historical political intrigue story featuring a sharp power couple, intricate court schemes, and military strategy. The tension between the leads and the richly detailed setting make it ideal for a sophisticated historical donghua.

Sha Po Lang (Stars of Chaos)
Author: Priest
A steampunk-inspired fantasy adventure with excellent world-building, found family elements, and deep emotional bonds. The blend of mechanical innovation and martial arts offers strong visual potential.
Little Mushroom
Author: Shisi
A unique post-apocalyptic sci-fi story centered on a non-human protagonist navigating a mutated, desolate world. Its quiet emotional intensity and atmospheric setting would create a visually striking and memorable series.
Global Examination
Author: Mu Su Li
A high-stakes survival story involving a mysterious examination system. Fast-paced, inventive, and full of tension and teamwork, it has excellent potential for dynamic action sequences and character growth.
Golden Stage
Author: Cang Wu Bin Bai
A historical novel featuring an arranged marriage, political intrigue, and a warm yet mature relationship. Strong character writing and elegant court dynamics would suit a refined historical adaptation.
Nan Chan
Author: Tang Jiuqing
A mythological fantasy with themes of reincarnation, devotion, and poetic tragedy. Compact but emotionally devastating, it would shine in an atmospheric, beautifully animated format.
Faraway Wanderers (Tian Ya Ke)
Author: Priest
A classic wuxia road story known for its banter, adventure, and gradual emotional intimacy. While it inspired the popular live-action series Word of Honor, a full donghua could explore the original novel’s tone more faithfully.
Peerless (Wushuang)
Author: Meng Xi Shi
A historical/wuxia mystery involving identity, politics, and a sharp dual-lead dynamic. Strong plotting and character work make it a solid candidate for animation.
Remnants (Can Ci Pin)
Author: Priest
A sci-fi military and political intrigue story exploring loyalty, broken systems, and profound bonds. Its distinctive setting would stand out in the current donghua landscape.
Previously Announced but Never Released
Two other titles deserve special mention:
- Liu Yao (The Revitalization of Fuyao Sect) by Priest — Announced around 2021 with trailers and voice actors, but still unreleased.
- Silent Reading (Mo Du) by Priest — Announced around 2020–2021 with promotional materials, yet it never made it to screens.
Both remain strong candidates that fans continue to hope will eventually see the light of day.
The novels above represent some of the strongest storytelling the danmei genre has to offer. While content restrictions continue to limit full adaptations in China, the international popularity of these works — along with the success of existing donghua — shows there is clear demand.
