Lie Huo Jiao Chou, also known as Drowning Sorrows in Raging Fire had been one of the most spectacular danmei donghua in years, and it’s probably my favorite donghua adaptation from a BL novel by Priest. Despite her other works such as Silent Reading, Liu Yao, and The Defective might have been an even more enticing experience for many readers and donghua viewers, I really find Drowning Sorrows in Raging Fire an arresting and enthralling ride.
Drowning Sorrows in Raging Fire donghua adaptation was only one of the few selected Chinese animations that were streamed on Funimation and Crunchyroll along with Link Click, The Defective, and Heaven Official’s Blessing in 2021.
The donghua was released as part of the fall 2021 Chinese anime lineup and was animated by Shengying Animation. It follows the story of Xuan Ji and Sheng Lingyuan – an unlikely pair of individuals who found solace in the presence of one another and gives us a bittersweet journey throughout the series as they uncover a series of supernatural incidence that has something to do with their past.
Will There Be Drowning Sorrows in Raging Fire Season 2?
The finale of the donghua adaptation just left us all wanting more as it gives off an open conclusion. Therefore, it made fans think that Drowning Sorrows in Raging Fire may actually return for a 2nd season, after all, it did have a splendid run during its release.
With the story only just begun, it feels like Drowning Sorrows in Raging Fire Season 2 is badly needed because the donghua ended with such a huge cliffhanger which left things unresolved. We just can’t have our two main characters bid their farewells and walk their separate ways and that’s what fans had been holding onto all these years as we wait for updates about a possible sequel.
Currently, Drowning Sorrows in Raging Fire Season 2 hasn’t been announced or teased by its production committee, especially Bilibili which had been open with its upcoming projects, possibly this is because danmei donghua production is still under strict censorship and development is currently under restraint. Hence, we haven’t got any new updates about it.
Although it seems that the whole danmei genre in Chinese animation has been in drought recently because of the ongoing Chinese censorship crisis on which even other beloved BL shows were also halted or production hasn’t been heard of despite initial news such as in the case of Heaven Official’s Blessing Season 2, and Legend of Exorcism Season 3.
Back in Drowning Sorrows in Raging Fire and the question is if it’ll get a 2nd season. Currently, the answer is NO, that is until we receive further updates about it. After all, there are still plenty of things that we need to know about the past of Sheng Lingyuan. Since we only touched the tip of the iceberg so far, and obviously, there’s more to his past that makes the experience of unraveling it a curious and exciting one.
Moreover, we also need supplementary details on all the revelations that had been unveiled about Xuan Ji so far and how he is related to Sheng Lingyuan, and for sure, a sequel is needed for them to fully figure out how they should feel towards each other.
Now, all that we can do is wait for new updates.
